How Etsy Fees Work
Etsy has the most multi-layered fee structure of any platform covered by FlipMargin. Unlike eBay's single final value fee or Mercari's flat 10%, Etsy stacks several distinct charges on every sale. Understanding each component is essential for pricing your handmade goods, vintage items, or craft supplies profitably, because the combined effective rate can be much higher than the headline 6.5% transaction fee suggests.
As of our last verification on 2026-10-21, Etsy charges the following fees on a typical sale: a $0.20 listing fee charged when you publish a listing (and every 4 months when it auto-renews), a 6.5% transaction fee on the total sale amount including shipping, a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25 per transaction, and optionally an 15% offsite ads fee on the item sale price if you participate in Etsy's offsite advertising program.
Etsy Listing Fees
Every time you publish a new listing on Etsy, you are charged $0.20. This fee is charged upfront, not when the item sells. Listings remain active for 4 months, after which they auto-renew for another $0.20 unless you manually disable auto-renewal. This means that unsold inventory has an ongoing cost on Etsy — if you list 100 items and none sell, you pay $20.00 upfront and another $20.00 every 4 months. This is fundamentally different from platforms like eBay (free listings in most categories), Mercari (free listings), and Poshmark (free listings).
Etsy Transaction Fee
The transaction fee is 6.5% of the total amount the buyer pays, which includes the item price and any shipping charges. On a $50 sale with $10 shipping, the transaction fee is 6.5% of $60, or $$3.90. This fee is charged per item in the order — if a buyer purchases 3 items in one transaction, the 6.5% fee applies to each item's portion of the total.
Etsy Payment Processing Fee
Etsy charges a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25 per transaction. This fee applies to the total payment amount, including shipping and any sales tax collected. Unlike the transaction fee, the processing fee is charged once per order, not per item. On a $50 order, the processing fee would be $$1.75.
Etsy Offsite Ads
Etsy offers an optional (for sellers under $10K/year) advertising program called Offsite Ads. When you opt in, Etsy promotes your listings on external platforms like Google, Meta, and Pinterest. If a buyer clicks one of these ads and purchases within 30 days, Etsy charges an additional 15% fee on the item sale price (not including shipping). This fee is significant — on a $50 sale, it adds $$7.50. For sellers earning over $10,000 per year, offsite ads are mandatory, not optional.
Etsy Fee Edge Cases
Pattern fees: If you sell digital patterns, the fee structure is the same as physical items. Vintage items: Items that are at least 20 years old qualify for sale on Etsy and follow the standard fee structure. Multiple-item orders: The transaction fee applies per item, but the processing fee is per order. Sales tax: Etsy collects and remits sales tax on behalf of sellers in many jurisdictions; this does not affect your fee calculation but is collected from the buyer.
