How Reselling Platform Fees Work

Every reselling platform takes a cut of your sale, but the way each one calculates that cut is different. Some charge a flat percentage, others use tiered fees, and a few layer on multiple charges that can eat into your profit without you realizing it. Understanding how each platform structures its fees is the single most important thing you can do to maximize your margins as a reseller.

eBay Fees

eBay charges a final value fee of 13.6% on the total sale amount, which includes shipping. If you have an eBay Store subscription, that rate drops to 12.7%. eBay Top Rated sellers receive an additional 10% discount on the variable portion of the fee, meaning your effective rate could be as low as 11.43% with both a store subscription and Top Rated status. On top of the percentage fee, eBay charges a per-order fee of $0.30 when the total (item price plus shipping) is $10 or less, and $0.40 when the total exceeds $10. These per-order fees are relatively new and can noticeably impact low-priced items.

Mercari Fees

Mercari keeps it simple with a flat 10% selling fee on the total amount, including shipping. There are no per-order fees, no listing fees, and no processing fees on top of that 10%. This makes Mercari one of the more straightforward platforms to calculate profit on. However, you should always verify the current fee structure in the Mercari app, as promotional changes and category-specific adjustments can occur.

Poshmark Fees

Poshmark uses a two-tier system. For items selling under $15, Poshmark charges a flat fee of $2.95. For items selling at $15 or more, the fee is 20% of the sale price. Poshmark includes shipping in the form of a flat-rate prepaid label paid by the buyer, so you do not need to separately charge for or calculate shipping costs in most cases. The 20% rate is the highest among the major platforms, so Poshmark tends to work best for higher-priced items where the flat $2.95 fee would be even worse proportionally.

Etsy Fees

Etsy has the most layered fee structure of the five platforms. Each listing costs $0.20 to publish. When an item sells, Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee on the total (including shipping), plus a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25 per transaction. Optionally, if you participate in Etsy Offsite Ads, an additional 15% fee applies to orders that come through those ads. When you add all of these together without offsite ads, the effective rate is roughly 9.5% plus $0.45 per sale. With offsite ads enabled, it can jump to over 24% on the sale price alone.

Facebook Marketplace Fees

Facebook Marketplace charges no fee for local pickup sales — you list, the buyer pays you in person, and Facebook takes nothing. For shipped items, Facebook charges 10% of the total sale amount (including shipping) with a minimum fee of $0.80. This makes local pickup the most profitable option on any platform if you can arrange it safely. For shipped sales, the 10% rate is competitive, but the $0.80 minimum means very low-priced items face a proportionally higher fee.

Fee Comparison Table by Sale Price

Platform fees at different sale prices (no shipping charged, default settings). eBay assumes no store subscription. Etsy assumes no offsite ads. Facebook assumes shipped, not local.

Platform $10$25$50$100$250
eBay $1.66$3.80$7.20$14.00$34.40
Mercari $1.00$2.50$5.00$10.00$25.00

Etsy $1.40$2.83$5.20$9.95$24.20
Facebook Marketplace $1.00$2.50$5.00$10.00$25.00

Worked Examples: $15, $50, and $150 Items

Each example assumes the item was purchased for 50% of the sale price, no shipping charged to buyer, no shipping or packaging costs, and default platform settings (no eBay Store, no Top Rated, no Etsy offsite ads, Facebook shipped not local).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which reselling platform has the lowest fees?
Facebook Marketplace local pickup has zero fees, making it the cheapest option if you can meet the buyer in person. For shipped items, Mercari and Facebook Marketplace both charge 10%, which is generally lower than eBay (13.6%), Poshmark (20% on items $15+), and Etsy (6.5% + 3% + $0.25 + $0.20 listing). However, the best platform depends on your item type, audience, and shipping costs — not just the fee rate.
Does eBay charge a fee on shipping?
Yes. eBay applies its final value fee to the total amount including shipping charges. So if you sell an item for $30 and charge $10 shipping, eBay calculates its percentage fee on $40, not $30. eBay also charges a per-order fee of $0.30 for totals of $10 or less, or $0.40 for totals over $10.
How does Poshmark's $15 threshold work?
Poshmark uses a two-tier fee structure. If your item sells for under $15, Poshmark charges a flat fee of $2.95. If your item sells for $15 or more, Poshmark takes 20% of the sale price. There is no fee on shipping because the buyer pays a flat shipping rate for a prepaid label.
Are Etsy offsite ads fees mandatory?
Etsy offsite ads are optional for sellers making under $10,000 per year. If you opt in, Etsy charges an additional 15% fee on the sale price when a buyer clicks an offsite ad and purchases within 30 days. For sellers making over $10,000 annually, offsite ads become mandatory. Use the toggle in the calculator to see how this affects your profit.
How accurate are the fee calculations?
All fee rates were last verified on 2026-10-21. Platforms update their fee structures periodically, so you should always confirm current rates on the platform's official seller help pages before making pricing decisions. FlipMargin is a reference tool and does not guarantee that fees match what a platform charges at the time of your sale.
What is the difference between profit margin and ROI?
Profit margin is your profit divided by total revenue (sale price plus shipping charged), expressed as a percentage. ROI (return on investment) is your profit divided by your item cost, expressed as a percentage. A 50% margin means you keep half of every dollar earned, while a 100% ROI means you doubled your money on the item itself.
